Description

The Atari was not in a very good position when the 7800 released due to the North American video game crash and the failure of the Atari 5200, to save on costs it was developed by another company known as General Computer Corporation. The 7800 was the first console with backwards compatibility, it worked with Atari 2600 games but not 5200 games due to the console’s failure. The console only had 59 released for it and most were enhanced versions of 2600 games. The console was a lot more powerful than the Atari 5200 and featured a controller with a design similar to the NES and Master System controllers, this was considered an improvement from the keypad design of the 5200. The cartridges required a digital signature form Atari to prevent low quality games from making it onto the console as was the case with the 2600. The console was a flop due to the low marketing budget, lack of games and the stigma that Atari had following the video game crash.
