.The PS3 was the first HD console and the first to play Blu-rays, its launch was hindered by its extremely high price which was caused by the extremely advanced GPU, Blu-ray drive and high number of ports. The console was difficult to develop for which made developers move to the Xbox 360 and many PS3 versions of games had a high number of glitches not present on the Xbox 360 and PC versions, this happened to the PS3 versions of The Orange Box and many Bethesda games. In 2008 Sony released the PS3 slim which removed a lot of the ports and the ability to play PS2 games but in return it was significantly cheaper and this made it easier for the console to compete with the Xbox 360 and Wii. The PS3 also expanded its consumer base by being compatible with the PSP to allow for remote play, the PS3 was also the first home console by Sony to allow for downloadable games and the first with widespread support for streaming services. A lot of Sony’s major franchises were started on the console such as Uncharted, Little Big Planet and The Last of Us, which was released only months before the PS4. Third Party support was also strong with the seventh generation of consoles generally being considered the golden age of Call of Duty. Despite a rough launch the PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 by a small margin, this is likely because Xbox is not very popular in Japan.
