The Game Boy Colour was the first true successor to the Game Boy after nine years on the market, the console was a major success from the start due to the popularity of Pokémon which meant people could play the game in colour on a handheld for the first time. Unusual for a console, roughly a third of all Game Boy Colour games worked on the original Game Boy. The console’s library was smaller than its predecessor but the ability to play Game Boy games in colour made it a worthwhile purchase for many. The Game Boy Colour was not the first time that Game Boy games were playable in colour as the Super Game Boy released four years earlier but this was the first time they were in colour on a handheld. You can change the colour scheme on a game by holding down certain buttons before the game boots. One of the console’s most unique games was Kirby Tilt and Tumble which used an accelerometer to control Kirby, this was six years before the Wii. The console’s most popular game was Pokémon Gold and Silver which ironically worked on the original Game Boy unlike its third game Pokémon Crystal. The Game Boy Colour was also the first time you could play the original Super Mario Brothers on a handheld and even featured new game modes and the Japanese version of Super Mario Bros 2 which can be unlocked after getting 300000 points. Despite the console’s success it was succeeded only three years later with the Game Boy Advance.
